RI Senate Passes Broad Synthetic Drug Ban

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ In an attempt to stay ahead of illicit drug chemists, the Rhode Island Senate has voted to broadly ban synthetic recreational chemicals sold as fake marijuana and bath salts.

Supporters say existing bans on synthetic pot and bath salts don't go far enough because chemists can make small changes to their formulations to circumvent the law.

The proposal that passed unanimously on Wednesday would ban entire classes of compounds to outlaw chemical formulations that haven't even been invented yet.

Both types of drugs have been linked to thousands of emergency room visits around the country. Three Rhode Island men died last year after using bath salts.

The House has already passed similar legislation.
