MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) _ The popular Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge has reopened after repairs to damage done by Superstorm Sandy.
Juancarlos Giese, the refuge's deputy manager, tells the Providence Journal they were surprised when the state Department of Transportation informed them Wednesday that workers had finished fixing damage to the access road.
The refuge, which had been closed since Oct. 30, was able to reopen at about 4 p.m.
Giese says the parking lot was already filling up a couple of hours later.
Waves fueled by Sandy destroyed the eastern end of the road that runs along Sachuest Beach, making it impassable. The storm's surge also damaged several trails, which have since been relocated.
