PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A bill introduced in the Rhode Island House calls for the use of environmentally friendlier cleaning products at schools to lessen any impact on student health and the environment.

The Green Cleaning Act is sponsored by Rep. Jeremiah O'Grady. It directs the Department of Education to develop guidelines in consultation with the Department of Health for the use of "environmentally preferable" cleaning products.

The Lincoln Democrat says the bill aims to make schools healthier for students and staff with asthma and other respiratory issues that can be triggered by industrial cleaners.

Schools would deplete their current supplies before purchasing the new ones.

The House Health, Education and Welfare Committee last week recommended the measure be held for further study.
