Central Falls Mayor to Run Unopposed in Fall Race

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) _ Central Falls Mayor James A. Diossa will have an easy time in his re-election bid.

The city's first Latino mayor faces no opposition in this fall's election.

The Providence Journal reports that Diossa says he will still run a campaign as if he had opposition.

The political landscape in the state's smallest and poorest city will likely change just a year after Central Falls emerged from federal bankruptcy and state receivership. It's the first insolvent city in Rhode Island.

Key people in the city's Latino community, led by Diossa who is Colombian, became involved. Latino residents account for more than 60 percent of the population of 19,000.

Also helping Diossa are the decisions by three members of the City Council who are not his allies to call it quits
