Chafee to submit budget proposal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee will soon deliver his last state of the state address to the General Assembly.

The Democratic governor is set to deliver the speech on Wednesday, when he is expected to submit his budget proposal for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Chafee, who is not seeking a second term, has said he wants lawmakers to set education and infrastructure as priorities while protecting funding for local cities and towns.

The budget proposal will also have to contend with an estimated $100 million shortfall.

Lawmakers typically make big changes to the governor's budget recommendation before approving it later in the session.

The General Assembly began the 2014 session Tuesday.
