PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) — Portsmouth police are trying to determine why a 56-year-old woman shot herself to death in her home during a 26-hour standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have not released the woman's name. Police say she was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in her Union Street home Saturday afternoon when a state police tactical unit entered the house after no one answered negotiators' phone calls.
The standoff began at about 1:15 p.m. Friday. Negotiators with state police and Newport police were called in to help.
Officials say the woman was alone in a bathroom with a gun pointed to her head and other firearms next to her.
Police say negotiations continued through the night, but she wouldn't surrender. Several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
