CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Cranston police captain has been suspended with pay as city officials determine whether he should be fired for ordering a ticketing blitz that they say was in retaliation against two City Council members.
Acting Police Chief Kevin Barry suspended Capt. Stephen Antonucci on Thursday for allegedly violating police department rules and regulations.
City Councilors Steven Stycos and Paul Archetto say police issued an extraordinary 128 parking tickets in their wards in November, within two days of their voting against a police contract. A state police investigation concluded no crimes were committed.
Antonucci, who is president of the local police union, says the timing of the ticketing was coincidental and he only was replying to requests by the mayor and council to enforce city parking laws.
