Crews demolish part of RI mill after fire

LINCOLN, R.I. (AP) — Demolition crews have torn down nearly a third of a 110-year-old vacant mill in Lincoln after a huge six-alarm fire last week, while officials continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Parts of the mill that were the most damaged in Thursday's fire were razed Saturday, as officials from the local police and fire departments, the state fire marshal's office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives examined the site.

The mill near the Blackstone River was built in 1903 and was part of a bleachery complex. The building's owner said it has been vacant for years, except for a small section used for storage.

Local officials say they had been worried about a fire at the mill.
