PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — State environmental officials say a dead fox found in East Greenwich in the same area where one attacked several people last month has tested positive for rabies.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said a gray fox whose carcass was found Monday in a barn in the vicinity of Tillinghast and Frenchtown roads was positive for rabies.
The department said it's unsure how long the animal had been dead or if it is the same one that bit residents in November. But they said it's likely the fox transmitted rabies to other animals before it died.
A horse in the barn where the fox was found had not been properly vaccinated against rabies and has since been immunized and quarantined.
