PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island's economic development agency has approved a $200,000 grant for a North Kingstown company developing a hydropower project.
The board of directors of the Economic Development Corp. on Monday approved the grant for JAL Hydro LLC through the agency's Renewable Energy Fund.
The money is for a pre-development feasibility study to support the development of two generators in the Natick Pond Dam in West Warwick.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who serves as chairman of the EDC board, says the state's rivers and dams represent an opportunity to harness hydropower to create clean electricity.
The energy fund has awarded $637,000 to 14 businesses and organizations in four rounds of funding this year.
