Ethics Complaint Against Fire Chief is Dismissed

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The state Ethics Commission has dismissed a complaint against the chief of Lincoln's Lime Rock Fire district over the registration of his cars.

Last year, the commission found probable cause to investigate whether Frank Sylvester used his public office for financial gain by registering his cars with the fire station's address rather than his home in Pawtucket, which has a higher car-tax rate.

But the commission ruled Tuesday that there was not enough evidence to show Sylvester knowingly and willfully violated the ethics code.

Sylvester's attorney says the chief sought advice from the Department of Motor Vehicles before registering the vehicles.

A state police investigation resulted in no charges, but Sylvester was ordered to register the vehicles to his home. His lawyer says he has done that.
