Ex-Chariho School Official to Appeal Conviction

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) _ A former member of the Chariho Regional School Committee is preparing to appeal her conviction for violating Rhode Island's social host law.

The Westerly Sun reports that Terri Serra made her first court appearance in the appeal Monday at Washington County Superior Court. She was referred to a public defender and a pre-trial was rescheduled for April 8.

Serra was sentenced in January to six months of probation and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service after being found guilty of allowing minors to consume alcohol and marijuana on her property in Richmond last October.

Several high school students who were at Serra's property were injured in a car accident later the same night.

Serra says she didn't know the teenagers were drinking and smoking on her property.
