Ex-DLT worker to pay $25K in restitution for fraud

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A former Rhode Island labor department employee must repay over $25,000 in restitution for unemployment insurance fraud and serve a year of home confinement.

Authorities said ex-Department of Labor and Training worker Ruth Rosa-Rios pleaded no contest Thursday to accessing a computer for fraudulent purposes, obtaining money under false pretenses and conspiracy.

Under the plea agreement, the 43-year-old will serve one year of home confinement and must pay full restitution. The rest of her 10-year sentence was suspended with probation.

Authorities say Rosa-Rios in 2011 authorized jobless benefits for her husband and alleged co-conspirator, Jose Rios, which he was not entitled to.

The state attorney general's spokeswoman says Jose Rios has pleaded not guilty to obtaining money under false pretenses and conspiracy. He's due in court Feb. 6.
