PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The outgoing Indian ambassador to the U.S. and China has accepted a fellowship at Brown University's Watson Institute.

The university announced Monday that Nirupama Rao will begin her one-year appointment in January.

Rao served as the Indian ambassador to the U.S. from 2011 to this month. Before that she had served as India's foreign secretary and has held diplomatic posts in China, Russia and Latin America.

While at Brown Rao intends to work on a book about the impact of new media on government and deliver a lecture in the fall of 2014.

The fellowship is part of the Brown-India initiative, a program that involves research and cultural and academic exchanges with organizations and universities in India.
