Fung: Cranston ticket probe to get independent review

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — The mayor of Cranston has hired a private investigator to review the police department's investigation into allegations that police issued parking tickets as political retaliation.

Mayor Allan Fung announced Monday that he has hired Louis Stephens of New Jersey to evaluate the police department's ongoing internal investigation.

Two city councilmen said last week that police issued more than 60 tickets in each of their wards following their votes against a proposed police contract. They say only nine tickets were issued in the rest of the city in the same period.

Fung says he takes the allegations of police misconduct seriously and that if found to be true, they will be dealt with swiftly. He says Stephens, a former FBI agent, will ensure that the police investigation is thorough and fair.
