Gun safety task force to meet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island legislative commission looking at ways to keep firearms out of the hands of those with severe mental illness is holding its first meeting.

The state's General Assembly formed the Gun Safety Task Force earlier this year to review laws and regulations on the use of mental health records in gun background checks. Rhode Island currently does not share mental health records with the federal background check system.

The task force includes lawmakers, mental health professionals, law enforcement officers and gun rights advocates.

The commission will meet Thursday afternoon at the Statehouse.
