Latest mosquito tests negative for West Nile, EEE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The latest mosquito samples tested in Rhode Island are negative for West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis.

The state's Department of Health announced Monday that there was no sign of the viruses in 89 mosquito samples taken from around the state.

Both viruses have been detected in previous mosquito tests. The state says one report of a human case of West Nile has been reported. A 33-year-old man was hospitalized and treated for West Nile virus in mid-September.

State health officials warn that the risk of infection from the mosquito-borne viruses will continue until the first hard frost. They encourage people to wear repellant when outside and to cover up during outdoor activities at dawn and dusk.
