PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Proposed raises for 14 Chafee administration officials take effect next week, barring action from the state legislature.
House Speaker Gordon Fox tells the Providence Journal lawmakers are still looking over last month's proposal, which would give the top officials 3 percent raises in June and another 3 percent in December.
State directors have received individual raises at different times, but a group raise has not taken place since June 30, 2002, when they all received a 4.5-percent pay increase.
State law gives the legislature 30 days from receiving the governor's raise proposal to reject it. If lawmakers do not act, the raises will be implemented on May 19.
