WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) _ One of the Southern New England's most popular beaches has officially opened for business following months of cleanup from Superstorm Sandy.
Rhode Island's MisQuamicut State Beach held a grand reopening over the weekend, which included the third annual SpringFest celebration, featuring carnival rides, music, and other attractions.
The October storm destroyed dunes and pushed sand from the beach over Atlantic Avenue. It also damaged many nearby businesses.
The weekend celebration was sparsely attended amid rainy and cold weather. But officials say they have a full schedule of events planned this summer.
On Friday morning, those involved in the cleanup and recovery from Sandy will stage an event called Hands Along the Sands, during which an expected 3,000 people plan to hold hands along the beach in a show of unity.
