N. Kingstown woman denies hosting drinking party

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — A North Kingstown woman charged with allowing teenagers to drink alcohol at her home during her daughter's 16th birthday party has pleaded not guilty to violating the state's social host law.

Jayne Donegan was released on personal recognizance at her arraignment Tuesday for allegedly procuring alcohol for the teens and assaulting a police officer who came to the home to investigate.

Police say they went to the 51-year-old Donegan's home on Jan. 25 after getting complaints. Two teens were hospitalized for drinking too much.

Donegan's lawyer says his client denies the charges. Attorney William Devereaux says older teens who hadn't been invited to the party brought the alcohol, and his client was shoved by the officer, not the other way around. Devereaux has asked state police to investigate that officer's actions.

Donegan's next court date is Feb. 25.
