Officer Due in Court on Excessive Force Charge

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) _ A 46-year-old East Greenwich police lieutenant is scheduled to go before a district court judge, charged with assaulting a man who was in custody at the police station.

Lt. Paul Nahrgang was charged last week with disorderly conduct and simple assault.  He is accused of using excessive force on a 44-year-old malicious mischief suspect in a cell block processing area. The name of the alleged victim has not been released.

Nahrgang faces arraignment Tuesday in Kent County District Court.

Police Chief Thomas Coyle notified state police after reviewing a video of the May 22 incident and suspended Nahrgang with pay. Nahrgang, who has been a member of the force for 10 years, surrendered to state police on July 16.

He has not commented publicly on the arrest.
