PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered in Providence to give a warm homecoming to Olympic figure skating bronze medalist Marissa Castelli.
The 23-year-old Cranston native was presented with a commemorative key to her hometown and a citation from Gov. Lincoln Chafee during a ceremony Monday night at Schneider Arena at Providence College.
Castelli and skating partner Simon Schnapir helped the United States team win the bronze medal in the new team figure skating event. They placed ninth in the pairs competition.
Castelli says she was surprised by the large turnout at the rally hosted by WJAR-TV. She says her experience at the Olympics was surreal and is still sinking in.
Castelli and Schnapir plan to resume training Tuesday in Boston to get ready for the world championships in Japan next month.
