PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) _ Authorities say a suspicious item found in downtown Pawtucket has turned out to be an ordinary metal tank used in home water heating systems.
The discovery of the item late Friday morning prompted authorities to call in a bomb squad and briefly halt traffic at Roosevelt Avenue and Exchange Street.
Pawtucket Police Maj. Arthur Martins says authorities believe the item may have fallen from a passing vehicle or been abandoned as trash.
Police in Johnston also responded Friday to reports of a suspicious backpack left at a recreation center now under construction. Police say the backpack contained school books.
Woonsocket High School also was evacuated Friday morning for what police say was a bomb threat. The building was later cleared.
