PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police say the city's deputy tax collector altered records in the city's computer system to hide his own tax debt.

Marc Castaldi was charged Friday with using a computer for fraudulent purposes. Police at that time did not provide details of the charges.

The Providence Journal reports Castaldi told police in a recorded interview that he altered tax records numerous times between 2005 and this year to conceal the amount of taxes he owed on his home.

According to a police report, Castaldi also acknowledged that he kept his home off a list of delinquent properties to be sold by the city.

The 55-year-old Castaldi, who has been suspended from his job, declined to comment on the charges. He is due in court on July 22.
