Portsmouth Official Fined Over Campaign Reports

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) _ The state Board of Elections has slapped a nearly $8,300 fine on the chairman of the Portsmouth School Committee for failing to file any campaign finance reports from the 2010 election.

Committee Chairman David Croston told The Newport Daily News he wasn't aware of the fine. Asked if he failed to file the reports, Croston said he knows the Board of Elections believes he hasn't filed them.

The board says Croston didn't file 10 required reports detailing his campaign's spending and revenue.

Croston says he took no money from individuals and spent little on his campaign. He intends to resolve the problem with state officials.

The Board of Elections has fined numerous other candidates around the state nearly $1.5 million in total for failing to file campaign finance reports.
