Portsmouth OKs breathalyzer tests for students

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) — The school committee in one Rhode Island town has approved a policy permitting officials to administer blood-alcohol tests to random students at school dances or other extracurricular events.

WPRI-TV reports Wednesday that officials intend to have the policy in place for the school's homecoming dance on Saturday.

Under the policy, students attending an event would be required to draw a ticket at random to determine which ones are given Breathalyzer tests.

Students who refuse to draw a ticket would be sent home.

As a reward, those students who are selected for blood-alcohol tests would be entered into a raffle.

The station also reports that school officials in Tiverton, R.I. have approved a policy permitting Breathalyzer tests for students who show signs of intoxication at school events.
