Providence Mayor Involved in Chase of DUI Suspect

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Providence Mayor Angel Taveras was involved in a 10-minute car chase that ended with a man being charged with driving under the influence.

City police told WPRI-TV that the mayor was riding in the backseat of his city car Saturday night when it was nearly hit by a swerving SUV. Police say the mayor suggested to the city police officer driving his car that he stop the SUV driver before anyone got hurt.

Officer Earl Lopez turned on the siren in the mayor's car and chased after the SUV.

Police say the SUV driver, 22-year-old Kendall Perry of Central Falls, was caught near Brown Stadium. He was charged with DUI, reckless driving and several other crimes.

There's no phone listing for Perry. He's due in court on May 14.
