BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) — Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is starting off a visit to Rhode Island with a talk at the state's only law school.

O'Connor is scheduled to speak to students Wednesday morning at Roger Williams University School of Law. She will appear in conversation with Judge Bruce Selya of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

O'Connor was the first woman appointed to the nation's highest court and served from 1981 until 2006. She was appointed by President Ronald Reagan.

Later Wednesday, O'Connor will join Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Suttell to visit a social studies class at the Highlander Charter School in Providence. There, she will promote her initiative to improve civics education in American schools, called "iCivics."
