Rhode Island House poised to elect new speaker

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's House majority leader is poised to become speaker after another candidate for the leadership post conceded.

Nicholas Mattiello, a Cranston Democrat, is expected to be selected Tuesday to succeed Gordon Fox, who abruptly resigned the speakership after his home and Statehouse office were raided by authorities.

House Oversight Chairman Michael Marcello had challenged Mattiello for the chamber's top job but announced hours before the vote that he doesn't have the votes to win.

Fox resigned as speaker Saturday, one day after the raid by criminal investigators. Authorities haven't said what the probe is about or whether Fox is a target.

Mattiello is an attorney who was first elected to the legislature in 2006. He's known as a staunch Catholic and conservative Democrat, though he voted last year to legalize gay marriage.
