PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The unemployment rate in Rhode Island fell slightly in May to 8.2 percent, and the number of jobs was up significantly.
The state Department of Labor and Training said Thursday the jobless rate fell one-tenth of 1 point from April. Officials said that's the lowest level since August 2008.
The number of jobs was up 2,000, to 477,600, from the revised April figures. Meanwhile, the number of employed residents was up 2,700, to 512,200. That's 7,400 more than a year ago.
The size of the labor force was 557,800 in May, up 2,000 from April but only slightly above what it was a year ago.
The U.S. unemployment rate for May was 6.3 percent.
Rhode Island's jobless rate for the same month a year ago was 9.5 percent.
