RI Atty. General approves sale of Landmark

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's attorney general has approved a California-based hospital chain's proposal to buy Landmark Medical Center, including the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said Monday the approval of the sale to Prime Healthcare Services includes some conditions. The state health department gave its approval on Friday.

Prime said it hopes to close the deal Nov. 30 and no later than Dec. 31. Financially troubled Landmark has been in receivership for five years.

Kilmartin said conditions include Prime's transfer of certain charitable assets to the Rhode Island Foundation, and that Prime notify his office of any actions taken against it or any resolution of a federal investigation of its billing. Kilmartin also said the company must inform his office of any future actions taken against it by government entities.
