PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island is awarding $810,000 in federal grants to 18 research scientists studying the effects of climate change on the state's coastal environment.
The money will fund six different projects including ones looking at invasive algae in Narragansett Bay, the effect of climate change on shrimp and a mysterious disease killing starfish along the northeast coast.
The research teams feature scientists from the University of Rhode Island, Brown University and Roger Williams University.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee and the state's Economic Development Corp. announced the funding on Thursday. Chafee, a Democrat, says the grants highlight the work being done at state universities and could help protect the state's coastal ecosystems.
