RI gov to unveil budget plan, address lawmakers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's governor is preparing to release his proposed state budget and deliver his final state of the state address.

Democratic Gov. Lincoln Chafee is scheduled to address lawmakers Wednesday night. The annual speech traditionally lays out a governor's priorities for the year. This will be Chafee's fourth and final such address. He is not seeking re-election.

Chafee will also release his recommended state budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Lawmakers typically make big changes before approving a budget in the final days of the session.

This year state leaders are contending with a projected $100 million deficit. Chafee has said he'll look to bridge the gap while protecting investments in education, roads and bridges and funding for cities and towns. A tax increase is unlikely.
