RI groups work to aid typhoon-ravaged Philippines

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Filipino-Americans living in Rhode Island are stepping in to help following the devastating typhoon that has killed an estimated 10,000 people.

The Providence Journal reports Monday that the Filipino-American Association of Newport County is accepting donated clothes, non-perishable food and other basic items which will be sent to those impacted by the powerful storm.

Members of the Filipino-American Association tell WLNE-TV that they've tried to contact friends and relatives in areas affected by the storm but can't get through because of damaged telephone lines.

The Rhode Island chapter of the American Red Cross says it is accepting financial donations to support the victims of the typhoon.

At least 9.7 million people in 41 Philippine provinces were affected by the typhoon.
