RI officials: mistakes made in dentist discipline

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island health officials are apologizing for getting key facts wrong when they suspended a Pawtucket dentist's license to prescribe controlled substances.

The dentist, Demetrius James Photopoulos, had his license suspended in October on allegations that he improperly prescribed drugs including hormones and steroids. The Providence Journal reports that the state Department of Health recently disclosed that it reinstated Photopoulos' license Nov. 6.

The Health Department released a statement saying that after it suspended the dentist's license, it learned that the facts used to discipline him were wrong. Officials say the facts were obtained from the department's prescription monitoring program, which contained inaccurate information.

The agency says it caused Photopoulos "undue embarrassment and hardship" and apologized.
