RI Senate Approves Chafee's Pick to Lead EDC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The Rhode Island Senate has unanimously approved Gov. Lincoln Chafee's (CHAY-feez) pick to head the state's economic development agency.

The Senate voted 36-0 Tuesday to confirm Marcel Valois as executive director of the Economic Development Corp. The post has been vacant for a year.

Valois served once before in the same role in the 1990s under former Gov. Lincoln Almond.

He is vice president of the Economic Development Foundation of Rhode Island and a former chief operating office and area vice president for Penske Automotive Group. Valois also served as an executive at the Blackstone Valley Development Foundation and director of planning and development for the city of Woonsocket.

The nomination of Valois received a unanimous endorsement last week in the Senate Commerce Committee.
