RI Senate Panel to Vote on Gun Crime Penalties

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Legislation to strengthen penalties for gun crimes is poised for a preliminary vote in Rhode Island.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a bill that would make it illegal to possess a firearm that has had its serial number removed. Another bill up for a vote would increase penalties for carrying a stolen gun while committing a violent crime.

The committee has not scheduled a vote on a proposed assault weapons ban.

Top lawmakers unveiled those bills earlier this year in response to the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. They also proposed a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, but that bill's chances have faded in the face of opposition from gun owners.
