NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Members of the Rhode Island Senate will be getting a first-hand look at progress at Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown.
Senators will tour the area Tuesday and get an update from the Quonset Development Corp., which oversees efforts to revitalize the former military installation.
The business park is home to more than 175 companies employing some 9,500 people. The port at Quonset handled more than 200,000 imported automobiles brought in by ship, rail and truck in 2012. In 2011, the port was ranked the seventh largest auto-importer in North America.
Earlier this month, the largest rooftop solar power array in New England began generating electricity at the business park.
Members of the state's House of Representatives are planning their own tour of Quonset next month.
