RI Supreme Court Upholds Award in Sinkhole Lawsuit

PROVICENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The state Supreme Court has upheld an almost $65,000 jury award to a Providence school bus driver who drove into a sinkhole in 2006.

Elizabeth Morel sued the city for personal injuries suffered in the accident on Fairview Street.

The Providence Journal reports the court rejected arguments that attorneys for the city should have been allowed to cross-examine Morel about worker compensation benefits she received after the accident.

According to evidence presented during a 2010 trail, the hole was created during a rain storm in April, 2006 when a patch placed on the road after some construction work failed, causing the front wheels of Morel's bus to fall in.

Superior Court Judge Susan McGuirl awarded Morel $59,239 in damages and $5,739 in court costs.
