RIPTA Free Bus Rides on Bad Air Days Could End

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Officials at the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority say the policy of offering free bus rides on days with unhealthy air quality may be jeopardized by a lack of funding.

WPRI-TV reports that RIPTA Chairman Scott Avedisian says the agency is looking for funding to continue the program.

The program has been operating for several years and offered free rides on RIPTA buses and trolleys whenever the state declares an Air Quality Alert. Avedisian says a final decision hasn't been made on continuing the program but that it may be cancelled if funding cannot be secured.

Avedisian says the program is intended to discourage driving on days with unhealthy air quality. He says RIPTA typically gets federal funds for the program.
