RISD President Maeda leaving for Silicon Valley

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — John Maeda, the president of the Rhode Island School of Design, is leaving the prestigious art and design school at the end of the year for a job in California.

RISD announced Maeda's departure Wednesday. Maeda will join the firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a design partner. He also plans to lead the Design Advisory Board at eBay.

Maeda, a designer and former Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, became RISD president in 2008. In a video message to students and faculty Maeda said he feels privileged to have led the school but that his new opportunities presented "irresistible pathways" to strengthen the role of design in the digital age.

RISD Board of Trustees Chairman Michael Spalter says the board will now begin the process of finding Maeda's successor.
