Salve Regina gets $1M for preservation program

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Salve Regina University in Newport has received a $1 million donation to endow its first named academic program in preservation.

The gift from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust is being formally announced to the university community Tuesday. It will be used to establish the Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program.

Drexel, who died a year ago, was a longtime Salve Regina trustee and preservationist.

The funding will establish a program for visiting lecturers and scholars and develop an archival component to the curriculum to train students in various methodologies and techniques used by archivists.

University officials say the school's cultural and historic preservation program is one 13 undergraduate programs in the U.S. that is certified by the National Council for Preservation Education.
