URI hosting forums on arming campus police

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — University of Rhode Island officials are seeking public input on whether campus police should carry guns.

The school has scheduled three forums on the issue. The first will be held Monday in the Memorial Union Ballroom on the South Kingstown campus from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by one on Oct. 28 at the same location and another on Oct. 30 at the Feinstein Providence campus auditorium.

The Providence Journal reports URI President David Dooley supports arming campus police, while faculty members oppose the idea.

The state Board of Education voted in May to allow public colleges to decide whether to arm their police officers. The decision came after URI's main campus was shut down in April on a report of a gunman that turned out to be false.
