Watchdog Group urges Chafee to withdraw Higher Ed Pick

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Common Cause is urging Gov. Lincoln Chafee to withdraw his pick for interim higher education commissioner because the government watchdog group says her appointment would violate ethics rules.

The governor Friday recommended that Eva-Marie Mancuso serve as interim commissioner. She is chairwoman of the Rhode Island Board of Education.

Common Cause says Mancuso's appointment would be a violation of the "revolving door" ethics provision because elected or appointed officials are prohibited from serving in paid positions requiring approval from the body on which they serve for one year.

A board spokesman says Mancuso is seeking an advisory opinion from the state ethics commission.

Chafee says the commission could grant a waiver to allow the appointment. He says Mancuso understands challenges facing higher education and would bring continuity to the job.
