PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island's turnpike and bridge authority has halted work on two of its spans after an employee on a repair project on the Mount Hope Bridge fell about 70 feet.
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority said an employee of a subcontractor doing steel painting and repair work on the bridge fell around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
The extent of his injuries was not immediately clear. His name was not released.
RITBA says it has halted work on the Mount Hope Bridge and the Newport Pell Bridge "out of abundance of caution'' while it reviews safety procedures and requirements.
